A cambelt (timing belt) failure is one of the few maintenance mistakes that can write a car off overnight. On most modern interference engines, a snapped belt means bent valves, damaged pistons, and a repair bill that exceeds the car's market value.
The frustrating part is that cambelts almost never fail without warning if they've been changed on schedule. The problem is that "on schedule" isn't as simple as hitting a mileage number.
This guide covers the intervals for every major UK manufacturer, the "whichever comes first" trap that catches out low-mileage owners, and how to know exactly where your car is in its cambelt life.
The two-part interval — mileage AND age
Every UK cambelt schedule has two numbers, not one. Miles and years. Whichever comes first.
A rubber cambelt degrades with age even if the car sits on a driveway. Heat cycling, ozone exposure, and the slow migration of plasticisers out of the rubber all weaken the belt over time. A 10-year-old belt with 40,000 miles on it is more likely to fail than a 5-year-old belt with 70,000 miles on it.
This catches out three groups of UK owners:
- Retired owners doing very low annual mileage
- Second and third owners of cars where the previous keeper didn't do the change
- Anyone buying a nine-year-old car with "only 45,000 miles" and no cambelt receipt
If you don't have documentation of the last change, assume it hasn't been done. Then price the £400–£900 replacement into your buying decision or your maintenance plan.
Cambelt intervals by UK manufacturer
The numbers below are indicative and cover the most common UK engines. Always check your specific model, engine and year against your handbook or the manufacturer's current service schedule — variations exist, and manufacturers occasionally revise intervals downward on specific engines when field data warrants it.
Ford
- 1.0 EcoBoost (Fiesta, Focus, Puma) — 10 years or 150,000 miles. Note: Ford revised this interval downward on early EcoBoost engines to 6 years / 100,000 miles due to belt degradation issues affecting the wet belt system.
- 1.5 / 1.6 / 1.8 / 2.0 TDCi (diesel) — typically 125,000 miles or 10 years.
- 1.5 / 1.6 EcoBoost petrol — 10 years or 150,000 miles.
- Older 1.6 / 1.8 Zetec petrol — 100,000 miles or 10 years.
Volkswagen Group (VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT)
- 1.4 / 1.6 / 2.0 TDI (diesel) — 130,000 miles or 5 years on newer engines, older units 60,000 miles or 4 years.
- 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.6 TSI petrol — many use timing chains, no scheduled replacement. Belt-driven variants typically 120,000 miles or 5 years.
- 1.9 TDI (older PD engines) — 80,000 miles or 4 years.
- 2.0 TFSI — chain, no scheduled interval (but chain wear is a known issue on early units — worth checking).
Vauxhall / Opel
- 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.6 petrol (Corsa, Astra, Insignia) — 60,000 miles or 10 years typically.
- 1.3 / 1.6 / 1.7 / 2.0 CDTi diesel — 100,000–150,000 miles or 10 years.
- 1.4 Turbo petrol (Astra J/K) — chain, no scheduled interval.
BMW
Most modern BMW petrol engines use timing chains and have no scheduled cambelt change. However, chain wear is a known concern on N47 diesel and early N20 petrol engines — worth listening for a rattle on cold start and budgeting for possible chain replacement (£1,500–£3,000) if buying used.
Mercedes-Benz
Similar to BMW — chain-driven on most modern engines, no scheduled belt replacement. Some older diesels used belts on the injection pump drive; check the specific model.
Toyota / Lexus
- 1.0 / 1.3 / 1.4 / 1.6 VVT-i petrol (Yaris, Auris, Corolla) — chain, no scheduled interval.
- 1.4 / 2.0 / 2.2 D-4D diesel — 100,000 miles or 6 years typically.
- Older 1.6 / 1.8 4A-FE / 7A-FE petrol — belt, 60,000 miles or 6 years.
Peugeot / Citroën / DS
- 1.2 PureTech petrol — 10 years or 100,000 miles. Important: this is a wet belt system and has attracted significant reliability concerns; PSA (now Stellantis) has revised the interval downward on some engines to 6 years / 60,000 miles.
- 1.4 / 1.6 / 2.0 HDi diesel — 100,000–150,000 miles or 10 years.
Renault / Dacia
- 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.6 petrol — 72,000–100,000 miles or 5–6 years.
- 1.5 dCi diesel — 90,000–100,000 miles or 5 years.
- 0.9 / 1.0 TCe petrol — 90,000 miles or 6 years.
Nissan
- 1.2 / 1.5 / 1.6 petrol — mostly chain on modern units.
- 1.5 / 1.6 / 2.0 dCi diesel — 90,000 miles or 5 years.
Honda
Modern Hondas are overwhelmingly chain-driven. Older 1.6 / 1.8 / 2.0 petrol (pre-2006) used belts at 90,000 miles or 6 years.
Hyundai / Kia
- 1.4 / 1.6 CRDi diesel — 60,000–90,000 miles or 5 years.
- 1.0 / 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.6 petrol — mix of chain and belt depending on year; check the handbook.
The wet belt problem
A growing number of modern petrol engines use wet cambelts — belts that run inside the engine, bathed in oil, and are supposed to last the life of the engine. In practice, several have failed early:
- Ford 1.0 EcoBoost (early units)
- Peugeot / Citroën 1.2 PureTech
- Some Vauxhall / Opel small petrols
If you own one of these, check the manufacturer's revised interval, use only the specified oil grade, and consider preventive replacement earlier than the original schedule if you're buying used with unknown history.
What a cambelt change actually costs in the UK
Typical 2026 UK prices:
- Independent specialist, 4-cylinder petrol/diesel, belt + tensioner + water pump — £400–£700
- Main dealer, same job — £600–£1,000
- V6 or transverse V-engine (harder access) — £800–£1,500
- Some sports cars and premium marques — £1,200–£3,000+
Always specify the water pump is replaced at the same time. The pump is driven by the belt on most engines and sits in the same sealed area; doing it separately later means paying the labour twice.
Documenting the change
A cambelt receipt is one of the highest-value pieces of service history a UK car has, because it's expensive to fake and impossible to skip. Every buyer of a car with a belt-driven engine asks about it.
Keep the invoice showing:
- Date of change
- Mileage on the day
- Belt, tensioner and water pump part numbers
- Garage details and VAT number
- Labour breakdown
